abstract = {The Digital Video Broadcasting by Satellite or DVB-S standard has been internationally adopted for satellite broadcasting. As data rates increase and tra-ditional C and Ku bands will be soon saturated, Ka, Q or V bands are envisaged for future transmissions. At these frequencies, the knowledge of the bit error rate for a given binary energy per power spectral density is no more sufficient in designing a communication system. The high propagation impairment fluctuations have to be analyzed taken into account an exact error model of DVB-S. This paper presents a model which generates errors with the same statistic as these produced by the decoding of a Reed Solomon code and a punctured convolutional code concatenation used in DVB-S. We first recall the principle of a DVB-S transmission chain. Then, we model the Viterbi decoder, the puncturing and the Reed-Solomon decoder. Finally, we give the simulation scheme that allows to obtain the performances of the DVB-S physical layer in a fast way. }
